Relaxed cozy upstairs loft with free entertainment every night of the week starts between 8 and 9 pm so check the calendar. Anastasia runs a warm comfortable place that is 98 percent vegetarian. Freshly painted floor to ceiling on 1 January 1997, Anastasia's Asylum has a whole new look. Anastasia, the new paint looks good. Every day of the week 7:00 AM to 2:00 AM.

Joni's Coffee Roaster Cafe

552 Washington Blvd., Marina del Rey 310-305-7147 .. Open at 5:00 am. Busy for breakfast from 8 to 10 am. Good Sunday morning crowd which sleeps in on Sunday. Extensive menu has lots of great hot choices. There is fresh fruit. The large bowl of fruit is enough to share with a friend. Fresh squeezed orange juice. Also good choice of fresh muffins. Joni roasts her own coffee beans on the premises. Each cup of coffee is brewed one cup at a time for always fresh coffee. House coffee is strong so if you like your coffee lighter ask them to add hot water or request a milder blend. Good lunch. Inside and outside seating. Outside works well on the hot summer days. Slower afternoon and evenings. Joni sets a small vase of fresh flowers on the table. They also serve lunch and dinner as well as beer and wine.

Little Frida's Coffee House

8730 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood 310-854-5421 .. Two blocks east of Robertson, corner of Huntley and Santa Monica on the south west corner. Open since September 1995, this delightful place has a selection of soups, salads, and sandwiches. New selected art is featured and displayed every 6 to 8 weeks. Relax in their lounge or sit outside. Very clean and well maintained. Tuesday is music. Wednesday is comedy. Thursday is special workshops or symposiums. Entertainment starts at 8 pm. They also sponsor special events. See calendar. Kathleen and Maureen have put together a wonderful place. There is free parking in the rear. Change in hours starting February 1997. Sun-Thur 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM, Fri/Sat 11:00 AM to midndight.

Lounge patio in the back. Thur Open Mike Musicians. Fri Stand Up. Sat Live Bands. Sun Open Mike Comedy. Entertainment starts about 8 pm. Partners Bobby Taheri and Ray Wiliani cover everything from food to entertainment. Sun-Thur 6:30 AM to 11:00 PM. Fri/Sat 6:30 AM to 2:00AM.

Pettersons Frisch Rost

10019 Venice Blvd., Culver City 310-839-3359 .. Corner of Clarrington and Venice just a short distance east of Motor. Good selection of coffees. Nice and clean. Second large room with a stage with casual seating. Some limited outside seating on the sidewalk if you want to watch the traffic instead of being the traffic. Good open mike for Comedy Night Tuesdays. Shows start about 8 pm. Sun-Thur 6:30-11pm. Fri/Sat 6:30-midnight. Check their monthly schedule of events. Gary has another place across the street for coffee which is open 6 am to 6 pm every day. Of course he roasts his own coffee beans.

1401 Ocean Front Walk, Venice 310-399-5547 .. Just a few hundred feet north of Windward. Great location right on Venice boardwalk. Great place to sit outside on the covered patio and watch the people. Large menu and full bar. Nice lunch and afternoon place. Line on summer weekends forms as early as10:00 am so arrive early or be prepared to wait. Open for breakfast 7 days. 8 am Saturday/Sunday. 9 am Monday thru Friday. Satellite TV and Karaoke. Un Urban Coffee House

Sandwiches, salads, soups. Entertainment starts about 8 pm. Monday mix of music, poetry, prose. Wednesday live jazz. Thursday comedy. Saturday singer and songwriters. Sunday Blues with BBQ 3-6 pm.
