Recent Las Vegas Developments of interest.
The Look for a $25 million facelift to The Mirage hotel-casino erupting
volcano on the Las Vegas Strip. The Mirage valcano first erupted in 1989.
Spectacular with a large wow factor then, it seems somewhat less so now.
It will be getting 120 new fireball-throwing devices that will be choreographed
to erupt in sync with a drum score co-composed by former Grateful Dead
drummer Mickey Hart. The project should be completed by the end of 2008.
This will be the final touches of the recent Mirage $110 million overhaul
which has included upgrading rooms and suites, adding a new nightclub,
restaurants and the Cirque du Soleil's Beatles-themed "Love." Announced
Wednesday 10 Septembe 2008.
| STAR TREK EXHIBIT TO CLOSE |
The Las Vegas "Star Trek: The Experience" is set to close Monday 1 September
2008 with a decommissionary ceremony. The attraction has drawn more than
3 million visitors since it opened in 1998. The attraction owner is Cedar
Fiar Entertainment Co. while the Las Vegas Hilton is its landlord. The
lease ends 31 December 2008 but it will take 4 months to disassemble the
model ships, strip away the starry sky and return the props to Paramont
Pictures Corp (which owns the franchise).
Bette Midler to replace Celine Dion in February 2008 as the resident
performer at the Las Vegas' Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Scheduled to premiere
20 February 2008, her show will be performed five nights a week. Tickets
are already on sale for $95 to $250. Look for a minimum of 100 concerts
a year for at least two years.
Elton John will continue to perform 50 shows a year at the 4,100 seat
Colosseum. That leaves room for shows by one additional artist. So look
for an additional artist to be announced. There is some speculation that
it might be Cher.
The Colosseum will go dark between Dion's grand finale 15 December 2007
and Better Midler's first show. The Colosseum at Caesars Palace was built
in 2003 for Dion's "A New Day" spectacular. Reported 3 May 2007.
