    Julia Roberts on Sunday won her first Oscar, a Best Actress award for her portrayal of a legal assistant in the drama ``Erin Brockovich'' at the Sunday 25 March 2001 73rd Academy Awards.

    General
    In 1988, superstar Julia Roberts was first noticed in the coming of age comedy "Mystic Pizza".  Her career skyrocketed after that with her Oscar nominated performance in "Steel Magnolias".  The following year she won audiences playing the part of Vivian Ward, the hooker who steals the heart of millionaire Edward Lewis, played by Richard Gere.  "Pretty Woman" gave her a second Oscar nomination. 

    Roberts followed with two big box office hits, "Flatliners" and "Sleeping With the Enemy".  Life took a turn for Julia, her next two films, "Dying Young" and "Hook" didn't fill the bill.  It was during this time that Roberts and her "Flatliners" co-star, Kiefer Sutherland, were to become man and wife.  Days before the wedding, Julia called it quits, not being able to handle Sutherland's womanizing. 

    It was almost two years before Julia Roberts was seen again on the big screen.  Her return was in the box office biggie, "The Pelican Brief". Now it was during this movie that Roberts and Lyle Lovett tied the knot. Their marriage lasted twenty-one months, but they remain friends after an amicable divorce. 

    There have been a few film flops, but Roberts was back on top in 1997 with her two hits, "My Best Friend's Wedding" and "Conspiracy Theory". 

    Shoelace, Julia Roberts' production company is doing well, and in addition to starring in future movies, she has plans to produce some.
