Robert Duvall has the innate
ability to get into each role he plays. He becomes that person, body
and soul.
Background - Duvall was born in San Diego where his father was
stationed in the Navy. He was raised on his family's tobacco farm
in Fairfax County, Virginia. He received a degree in drama at Principia
College in Illinois. Studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse
in New York.
Breakthrough Role - After a few years in summer stock, off-Broadway
and TV parts, his first screen role came as Boo, the neighbor of Atticus
Finch, played by Gregory Peck, in "To Kill a Mockingbird". His career
took off then and has been one of the most steady in Hollywood.
Oscar - Duvall won an Oscar for his portrayal of Max Sledge a
has-been country singer in the 1983 film, "Tender Mercies". Duvall
wrote and performed the songs used in the movie.
